Why You Need To Invest In PR Right Now
If you're a business owner, you know that uncertainty and fear can be real barriers to growth, especially in tough economic times. But here's the thing: even when times are tough, people and businesses still spend money. They still attend conferences, read books, and consume news, and buy things. So, if you want to attract more customers and grow your business, you need to be visible and credible in your industry.
Here’s something to think about…
Small businesses account for 44% of the U.S. economy, and most of us are much smaller than the technical definition of a small business, which is fewer than 500 employees. Plus, nearly 40% of small businesses earn less than $100,000 in annual revenue.
I get it, the impulse in a recession is to cut costs instead of focusing your attention on the PR activities you can do this month to bring more visibility to your product or service.
As a small business, your relative lack of scale means margins are tighter, and cash flow fears are all too real.
Investing in public relations can help you achieve that. Here are three reasons why I believe PR is a great investment for businesses that want to grow:
Boost your visibility: PR can help you get more media coverage, showcase your expertise, and build trust with potential customers. By staying top of mind and demonstrating your value, you can attract more qualified leads and ultimately make more sales.
Stay ahead of the competition: Your competitors may be cutting costs and playing it safe, but investing in PR can help you stand out and position your business as a thought leader. By sharing your unique perspective and insights, you can differentiate yourself from the competition and win more business.
Maximize your ROI: PR is a cost-effective way to build your brand and generate leads. By investing in the right PR activities, you can achieve long-lasting results that continue to benefit your business over time.
I know it can be scary to invest in PR when you're worried about losing clients or cutting costs. But here's the thing: focusing on visibility can set you up to make more sales, which is a lot more fun than laying off team members or scrapping that conference you've been looking forward to. And if you're like me, you started your business because you believe in taking risks and pursuing your dreams. Investing in PR is just another way to tap into that courage and take your business to the next level.
Don't be afraid to double down on your visibility strategy, even when times are tough. With the right mindset and approach, you can turn economic uncertainty into an opportunity for growth and success.
Think of it like this…
While your competitors are running around like chickens with their heads cut off, you have the chance to focus your attention on getting into the news more often, increasing your credibility, and building your brand authority. Now, that’s a recipe for success!
🏖️ Summer Content On Deck!
If you’re pitching your own content to media, then now is the time to pitch any summer-related content you have.
Think summer travel, sunscreen, hot mama summer, Father’s Day content, BBQ parties, how to beach it with kids, etc., etc. Any content you can think of related to summertime needs to be pitched now.
It’s May, and that means that in the media world, magazines especially, it’s already late June/early July. So if you’re thinking about pitching something for Mother’s Day, you’re too late. 😩
Now, you may be able to get away with pitching yourself to speak on an independent podcast related to Mother’s Day, but that might be tough. If you’re thinking of pitching your podcast to get on a listicle for content related to Mother’s Day, then I’m sorry to tell you but that boat has already sailed. 🚢
It’s super important to understand that media content calendars are happening at least 6 weeks out. Plan accordingly.
✅ PR Tip of The Week:
Use A.I. to support your PR efforts. It can help you save time and be your brainstorming partner. A.I. like ChatGPT’s ability to gather data and produce a natural-language response can work as a shortcut in your PR efforts. But in its current iteration, AI can be prone to errors, so be aware and double-check the information you receive. But, with some research and a little bit of finessing, A.I. can help you kick-start your PR efforts.
💡Try This: Brainstorm fresh pitch angles with ChatGPT. Type in “story ideas about <your topic>,” and ChatGPT will produce a list of angles that might work, or at least get you thinking. You can make the request specific and timely, like “summer <your topic>.” Obviously, PR plans can’t be based on ideas spit out by an AI chatbot, but they are thought-starters.
