5 Ways To Get Your Business PR Ready
I recently had a call with a small business owner that reached out to me for public relations services. One of the first things they said was, “I need PR to happen quickly because I need to make money now!
Cue the red flag! 🚩
When I looked at this business’s website, socials, and internal processes, it was clear they were missing the foundational pieces to elevate their brand’s visibility effectively.
PR can make your business money, I’ve seen it happen for myself and my clients.
But, what happens when you pour gas on a fire?
Woosh! It takes off like, well, wildfire.
Which is great… if you’re ready to handle the fire. If you’re not then PR is like pouring gas on the cold hard ground - it’s not going to amount to much.
Here’s the thing, public relations is a long game that can have huge returns, but it takes time.
Enlisting PR before you’re PR ready is only going to result in you feeling frustrated and will probably only achieve lackluster results.
Before you run out and hire a PR pro, get PR ready.
Here are five ways to get your business PR ready:
Prove your market fit: No customers, no business. Make sure you have a product or service that your audience wants. Take it one step further - Make sure your messaging connects with your audience.
Clean up your socials: Cover all potential places where people could find you and create the proper connection with them that your PR was intended for. You don't have to be active on every platform, but you do need to lock down your name or business name on each platform and make sure you accurately reflect who you are and what you do now - that includes getting rid of old stuff that is inappropriate for your audience. It shocks me how often I review a new client’s socials and find embarrassing photos, vulgar tweets, or cute photos of a new baby in the bath. Get rid of it or save it for your private channels.
Have a way to capture the attention you generate from PR: Do you have a clear and easy-to-follow path for potential customers to join your email list? A social follow is great, but the real return on investment comes from people you create a connection with through email. Make sure you give someone a good reason to join your list and make it super easy for them to do it. If someone has to click around to learn more about you, you will lose them.
Fix your links: Make sure that your links actually work and are easily accessed from your website. Check your link quality weekly or monthly to ensure nothing is broken when a media win leads to attention on your owned channels. Again, if someone is looking for you and it’s hard to find you or reach out to you, you will lose opportunities.
Have a structured sales process: A quality sales plan is essential to guide potential customers from interest to a sale. Before you start investing in PR, you need to know that you have a quality sales plan in place that warms your potential customers and intentionally guides them to the sale. Do you make sales by getting folks on the phone? Do you want them to purchase an initial product that leads them to something bigger? Are you a podcast company trying to get your content heard? Either way, you need a place to send people once they hear about you with instructions on how to take the next step.
Show up & be prepared: All successful businesses are built on relationships and when you bring a PR pro onto your team, their success in amplifying your platform depends on their relationships. If you show up for your interviews, meetings, or other opportunities under-prepared, in a bad mood, or not at all, you have jeopardized that relationship and it’s a quick way to get yourself fired as a client. The best thing you can do is take every opportunity seriously and make sure you are prepared ahead of time. If you’re working with a PR pro for the first time, don’t hesitate to ask them for prep tips. They will be more than happy to help.
If you don’t have one of these in place, yet, or you want to but you don’t know where to start, a PR team like, Tangia Renee PR, who focuses on PR that leads to growth and sales can help you get these foundational pieces in place.

✅ PR Tip of The Week:
Build relationships with journalists: Engage with journalists and build relationships with them before you need to pitch your story. Follow them on social media, share their articles, and offer insights or feedback on their work. This is exactly what every PR pro does and it makes it many times easier to get a story picked up. Why? you’re more likely to help someone you know than a complete stranger, especially on these weird internet streets.
💡Hint: Lots of writers and journalists are on substack.
